Far in the depths of the mighty complex of the Tuchola Forest, whose total area – 3,000 km² – is larger than the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, a charming open-air museum, where you can learn more about Kashubian culture, has settled on the banks of the vast Lake Wdzydze.
The Kashubian Ethnographic Park in Wdzydze Kiszewskie protects more than 50 historic buildings of various types – from rural homesteads, through noble manors, an old school, inns and windmills to a wooden church. In the open-air museum, pleasantly located in a pine forest, you will peacefully spend a few hours or even half a day!
The complex was built more than a century ago thanks to the passion and persistence of Mr. and Mrs. Gulgowski, who loved Kashubian culture and traditions so much that they asked to be buried on the grounds of the open-air museum. In addition to specimens of the region’s magnificently preserved architecture, on site you can see reconstructions of craftsmen’s workshops, where animators – enthusiasts introduce the secrets of the professions of blacksmith or wheelwright (wheel manufacturer).
You will see methods of grinding traditional snuff and embroidering regional Kashubian embroidery. You will be impressed by a completely preserved (with equipment) school building with a teacher’s apartment and historic wooden post mills, which you can see inside.
If you visit the open-air museum in a larger group, you can order a guided tour. Audio guides in various languages are also available on site.
