Sailboats on the Solina

Lake Solińskie, called “Solina” or “Bieszczady Sea” is the largest artificial reservoir in Poland. And also – a great place for a few days sailing trip with friends!

The lake was created in the 1960s as part of a program to develop the Bieszczady Mountains – a region that became a completely wild, empty region of the country after the post-war displacements. The 22-square-kilometer reservoir has a very long shoreline formed by numerous bays (as long as 166 kilometers!).

For most of the season, it is a fairly quiet place. The sailing season on this body of water begins in May and ends in late autumn. The water is quite warm and reaches up to 24 degrees in summer.

The Bieszczady Sea is divided into two parts. The first, located closer to the villages of Polańczyk and Solina, is busier. That is where two branches split off, towards Zawoz and Wołkowya, and towards Zatoka Czarnego and Rajskie. The latter branch is the second, calmer part of the lake. Sailing there, we pass places with such intriguing names as Wyspa Skalista, Zatoka Victoriniego or Półwysep Brossa, among others.

The water in the lake is usually smooth and calm, but the body of water can surprise you – it is worth seeking detailed advice from the shipowner before embarking on a cruise.

English websites offer many ads for yacht charters on the lake. There are 20 marinas available for sailors. The largest number of places where you can rent a boat can be found in Polańczyk and Solina. In Solina itself, it is worth walking up to the impressive concrete dam over 80 meters high – the largest in Poland. The view from its top is impressive!

Funfact – house on the lake

Lake Solina, like the entire Bieszczady Mountains, for years attracted people seeking remoteness from civilization. In the 1990s, the drummer of the popular blues-rock band Dżem, Michał “Gier” Giercuszkiewicz, lived here on a floating raft he constructed himself.

The musician spent more than 20 years of his life on the floating house – recording music for more albums and inviting friends to sessions here. He died in 2021, after a long illness.
