The green spine of Podlasie
Biking is undoubtedly the best way to explore Podlasie. The most beautiful corners of the region are crisscrossed by Green Velo – the Eastern Bicycle Route, a well-marked, asphalt route with full bicycle infrastructure, created by the joint efforts of Poland’s eastern regions with the EU support.
Green Velo is perhaps the most advanced bicycle project in Poland. Marked with distinctive orange signs, the route crosses 6 provinces of eastern Poland is over 2,000 kilometers long. More than 200 rest areas with stands, shelters and information boards have been built along the road.
In Podlasie thanks to Green Velo you can see the most beautiful places of the region: the Białowieża Forest, marshes on the Biebrza River, the Augustów Forest, Lake Wigry or the post-glacial hilly landscape around Suwałki.
Especially for you, we have selected two sections of the trail for one-day excursions!
Route I. Around Biebrza National Park
The route, which is about 44 kilometers long, crosses the most naturally beautiful parts of the Biebrza marshes. 90% of its length is paved, the rest is comfortable, sandy forest paths. Along the way you will see the 19th-century Russian fortress in Osowiec, the secluded villages of Barwik and Gugny, from where you are close to the spectacular “Ławki” marsh with its observation tower, and the village of Trzciany with its historic church and Jewish cemetery. Close encounters with elk very possible!
Length: 44 km
Driving time: about 4.5 hours
Difficulty level: moderate
Route II. By bicycle around Lake Wigry
The route circles the wild, post-glacial Lake Wigry in the northern part of the province, entirely covered by the national park.
Route II. By bicycle around Lake Wigry
The route circles the wild, post-glacial Lake Wigry in the northern part of the province, entirely covered by the national park. The symbol of this place is the beaver – traces of this animal’s activity will constantly accompany you along the way. By the way, you will be able to climb several lookout towers with magnificent views, traverse forest footbridges and bridges, and see the historic Camaldolese monastery on a picturesque peninsula in the village of Wigry. About half of the trail’s length is along forest roads and paths, and in some places you have to get off the saddle and carry your bike. It is best to take a mountain bike on the trail.
Length: 48 km
Driving time: about 5 hours
Difficulty level: intermediate
