“Bieg Rzeźnika” is a true legend of mountain running in Poland. It was created as a result of a “bet over beer”… and it has been organized for almost 20 years! At first there was only one distance – the crown one – 78 km. Recently it has been enriched with variants “Rzeźnik Ultra” and “Rzeźnik na raty”.
As of late, it has become a true festival of ultramarathoners, lasting almost a full week every June.
The start and finish line of the run is located in the village of Cisna in the central Bieszczady Mountains. Competitors set off from there at 6 am. The route crosses empty forest ranges on the Polish-Slovakian border.
This is a very unusual competition, as competitors can only participate in pairs. The hardships of getting up in the middle of the night and running in the twilight with a headlamp on your head are rewarded by a one-of-a-kind wilderness experience. And – which will only surprise those who do not run – one-of-a-kind views.
Prior to the introduction of the lottery system, enrollment – once the opportunity to register was opened – lasted at most a few minutes. All places were sold out in no time. Nearly 1,000 teams take part in the race every year, and still quite a few need to leave empty handed!
