Pannonica Folk Festival – in search of the sources of Central European music

“Fire not music!” – this is the slogan advertised by one of the most interesting world music festivals in Central Europe, the Pannonica Folk Festival.

On the last days of summer, folk bands from all over the world descend on a beautiful meadow in the village of Barcice, squeezed between the mountains and the rushing Poprad River (or as the organizers want – “in the bushes, in the middle of nowhere”). Leading the line’up are Balkan brass bands, feisty Roma fiddlers from Romania and Hungary, and bands reviving Polish folk music, such as the Warsaw Village Band, which has made an international career out of its distinctive “white voice” and creatively processed compositions from the Mazovia region. The Saint Nicholas Orchestra, whose music draws on the culture of the Greek Catholic and Orthodox highlanders of Poland and Ukraine – Lemkos and Huculs – was also a guest at the festival.

Pannonica draws on the tradition of cultural exchange between Poland, Hungary and the farther Balkans.

The nearby town of Nowy Sącz and numerous towns in the region have lived through centuries of trade with the kingdom of Hungary. It is best to come to the festival, held every year on a weekend in late August and early September, with a tent – the public campground has a special zone for families with children and very decent sanitary facilities for a large music festival. The three days filled with music are enriched by an extensive food and beverage zone, where you can eat inexpensively and deliciously and buy organic products from the region. There are also plenty of booths with original handicrafts and folk design.

If you are in the Low Beskids at the end of summer, be sure to stop by at least for one day at Pannonica – it will be a true musical experience of roots!
