You will only see such things in movies about the Wild West, possibly a cartoon about the Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner. Or in the Bieszczady Mountains!
A ride on the truest handcar is the dream of many a child…but also an adult. And if you add beautiful nature and the fun of pedaling, great fun is guaranteed!
Built in 1872 by the authorities of the Austrian Empire in 1872, railroad 108 was an important piece of railroad infrastructure. After that, however, it started losing its importance, and in 2013 all stations east of the town of Zagórz were taken out of service.
In 2015, however, this part of the railroad found a new purpose and became Poland’s longest bicycle handcar route. These differ from traditional ones in that you can ride them like a bicycle, setting them in motion with the power of your leg muscles. The handcars are 4-person (5-person, if 3 people are children). Only two people pedal, and the young ones can safely travel on the seats, which should be a convenience for parents.
The tour route made available is about 47 km long. The handcar rental shop and main station is located in the village of Uherce Mineralne. Most tours start from there, less often they start in Ustrzyki Dolne (off-season only on request).
All handcars participating in the ride are supervised by a manager. It is not possible to rent a handcar separately, except for organized rides. During the tour the guide talks about the places passed, stops are planned at the more important attractions.
The route crosses the gentle mountains of the northern part of the Bieszczady Mountains and ends in the border town of Krościenko.
